COMMISSIONS CURRENTLY CLOSED (should be open again in a few weeks).
…
When I am open for commissions, what are we looking at?
Okay, before we start I don’t do “Fan Art” commissions (by which I mean, art based on properties owned by other publishers/artists, Spider-Man, Batman, Boba Fett, Grendel, Doom Patrol, Gerault, Vroom Socko etc) unless it’s for a really good cause (or it’s a gift for friends – you can find a link to comics charities I’m a fan of in the side-bar on the home page), I mean I love drawing those guys, but I don’t own them, so the stuff I do just for fun you can find on my Fan Art Page.
Also by commissions, I’m thinking of images that are one-offs, most-likely suitable for framing or maybe including in your Kickstarter campaign as an extra. If you are looking for production Cover Art or interior Sequentials for reproduction you might want to check out my Comic Art Services page. Or if you are looking for Concept Art, Character Design or other Visual Development work, or Illustration, Gaming Character Portraits etc, head over to RobotVmonsteR, I’ll be handling all non-comics related imagery over there.
So, what WILL I do?
- Well, If you have a character or group of comics characters YOU OWN I’ll happily take on a commission based around that.
- If you are looking for a character or scenario design based around an original comics idea YOU are developing, I’ll happily work up an image for you.
- If you are a fan of any of the comics and comics characters I OWN, i.e. The Cthulhiad, The Lance, The Red Corsair, Toxic Shopping, Arcane ‘38 or Hare of The Dog, then I’m sure we can furnish you with something… ask away.
- And finally, if you’d like a comics based image that’s based on or inspired by IDEAS NO ONE OWNS or is now OUT OF COPYRIGHT (non-specific space pilots fighting non-specific aliens, mythological creatures in fantastical settings, punk kids hanging out on SF streets, Lovecraft Mythos based scenarios etc) then that’s a great place to start too.
Okay, so how much will it cost?
Well fot starters, if the commission is A4 or smaller the UK postage will be free (for international shipping see the bottom of the page), anything larger than A4 will be sent packaged in a card tube, and shipping costs added (again see the bottom of the page for details).
As for the art itself, the following breakdown should cover the basics, but if you have an elaborate idea or something unusual in mind, contact me and we can see if it’s “doable”.
Type 1 – Hero shots/splash pages – Single characters, busts or full figure, two or three character fight/interactions or small team-up/team hero poses with limited background detail, likenesses can be attempted from images sent by the commissioning party.
(so that’s reasonable numbers okay, no asks for forty-plus recognisable characters with likenesses in individual specific period uniforms, all falling out of multiple helicopters, wrestling a range of dinosaur and dog breeds, whilst trying to avoid tumbling old-school typewriters and souvenir statuettes of Michelangelo’s David over a recognisable top down view of Florence… that’s more your Type

Double page spreads are doable, just cost it as a two-page commission.
Type 3 – Sequentials, multi-panel break down, imagery/narrative flow typical of interior comics art. Again, better delivered at A3 or larger so as not to compromise detail.

Again, double page spreads are possible.
Type 4 – Other sizes or other formats – digital, trad inks, markers, paint, mixed media, paint and inks over giclee print – negotiable (I guess this is more if you are looking for something more complex, cinematic, unique or experimental).

Note: For any commissioned art above A4, thumbnails would be sent digitally as part of the commission/approval process, with reasonable amends at this stage seem as part of that process. Oh, and any decent traditional media, Pencils, Pencils and Inks created as part of a digital/colour work, I’ll probably throw that in the post too.
…
*to be clear, this is not giclee, if you would prefer a giclee we can discuss that, but it will bump the price a tad…
One last note:
I also reserve the right to say no to commissions, for any or a number of reasons, but to be honest, mostly if;
1, I’m really busy making comics or other stuff (I will usually just put up the commisions closed note in this instance)
or
2, I’m just not happy working on imagery dealing with that particular type of content / tone / sentiment / symbolic meaning etc. Feel free to ask, but be aware I might not always be able to say yes.
Cheers, g.
